DC4: Glide-symmetric radiating metasurfaces for radar antenna frontend

The Task 2.1 of the WP2 will be conducted with the doctoral project of the Doctoral Candidate 4, Mr. Kaan AKTAS.

The project will be supervised by POLITO (Francesca VIPIANA and Jorge TOBON) , IMST (Simona BRUNI  and Enrico TOLIN)  with a 2-month secondment at SINOWAVE (Zhongxia Simon HE) .

DC4: Glide-symmetric radiating metasurfaces for radar antenna frontend

Objectives

  • Study of a radiating GS metasurface element providing multiple beam scanning along one direction. Several GS configurations will be explored. Anisotropic surfaces will be considered in order to obtain the suitable illumination profile corresponding to the desired radiated pattern. Different structures of interest will be studied according to the bandwidth (W and G frequency bands).
  • A 2-D configuration of the previously designed elements will be considered in order to scan the beam along two directions, by keeping the required performance when radiating on both principal planes. A final optimization of the complete structure (too large to be simulated with commercial software) will be performed by means of the GS integral-equation developed by Researcher 6.
  • Evaluation of the designed antenna in connection to the feeding network pre-designed by Researcher 5, and modifications to the antenna if needed.
  • Prototype and measurement of the designed metasurfaces

Expected Results

  • Flat structures of interest assuring a 1-D scanning over the required bandwidth, classed according the band (W and G).
  • Connected 1-D flat structures composing the complete GS metasurface (at least one for bandwidth of interest).
  • Integrated GS metasurfaces with feeding networks designed by Researcher 5.
  • Designed prototypes of GS metasurfaces meeting market requirements.
